Planting Young Trees

The general instructions for planting young trees are as follows. Note that links below are provided from more specific instructions on certain species:

1. Select a suitable site: Choose a site that is well-drained, has good soil quality, and receives the appropriate amount of sunlight for the specific species of tree you are planting.
2. Dig a hole: The hole should be two to three times wider than the root ball and just as deep as the root ball.
3. Prepare the tree: Remove any damaged or broken branches, and gently loosen the roots if they are tightly packed.
4. Place the tree in the hole: Make sure the tree is straight and at the same level as it was in the container. Backfill the hole with soil, gently firming the soil as you go.
5. Water the tree: Give the tree a good drink of water immediately after planting, and continue to water regularly for the first year.
6. Mulch the tree: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture and prevent weeds.
7. Stake the tree (if necessary): If the tree is tall and likely to sway in the wind, stake it to provide support until it becomes established.
8. Monitor and care for the tree: Check the tree regularly for signs of stress or disease, and provide appropriate care as needed (such as pruning or fertilizing).
